Sofitel Lyon Bellecour from Patrick Norguet

Paris designer Patrick Norguet has refurbished the interior of a hotel in Lyon, France, inspired by the history of silk production in the local area.
This recent renovation, the work of  designer Patrick Norguet, has succeeded in bringing to the fore the prestigious character of a hotel that is a landmark in Lyon. The new sleek, yet welcoming and convivial interior is the product of the perfect complementary mix of traditional craft techniques and the designer’s eclectic choice of the very finest of materials. Built in the 70s and the backdrop to summits and top-level meetings in the past, its delightfully harmonious contrasts, the unexpected authenticity of its contemporary interior and the familiar modernity of its scale are what give this hotel a whole new appeal.
The designer’s ‘slow’ approach to restyling the hotel’s interior is behind this unique feel, giving it that timeless quality that will stand the test of time. For ‘slow design’ is not simply a passing trend, but a whole new concept, an alternative approach to design. It represents a completely new lifestyle with optimum use of available resources and a life led in harmony with the surrounding environment. Based on the coming together of three concepts, slow design is sensory, systematic and sustainable
The design of the common areas of the hotel – the lobby, the Le Melhor bar, the Silk brasserie , the Les Trois Dômes gourmet restaurant, the gym, the spa and the adjoining garden with its bar – is the result of an extremely detailed contextual analysis by the designer. The aim: to give the hotel a true sense of identity and to avoid the merely decorative. Mission accomplished, with the integration of both local and global features the designer placed centre stage, and global features the designer placed centre stage, and his communication of specific sensory experiences.

Recess Yoghurt Cafe - in New York City from Scalar Architecture

While developers Adam DeVito, Rami Hakim, and Blakely Page were researching for their fast-casual concept they happened upon Flurt, a New York frozen yogurt chain with a very cool look, courtesy of local firm Scalar Architecture. They gave principal Julio Salcedo a call, and so Recess, a sculptural space fabricated with rapidly renewable and recycled materials, was born.
"Though the issues at Recess were different [than Flurt], we were happy with a new challenge," says Salcedo. "The design inspiration was all about the embodiment of Recess as a concept—a nuanced sensorial and adaptive environment to recharge and relax."
The space is divided horizontally. The lower half is a patterned surface of Plyboo that constructs a figurative landscape of lean-to-walls, tables, counters and benches. The surfaces are meant to engage customers by ergonomically adapting to the activities of ordering and consuming, enabling customers to both lean and sit. The upper half—built out of fabric and recycled metal—configures a field that sets a mutable backdrop for different activities. Recess also engages the senses through interplay of light and reflection to create different moods responding to music, seasons, and times of the day."The first Recess store is a prototype that is helping the client group develop and solidify their concept and foundations including a focus on local sustainable products," says Salcedo. "There are more locations in the near future that will evolve from these explorations.
